Blizzard Beauty

The 2015 Blizzard is bearing down on us.  The snow is swirling and the trees have started blowing.  Since I love the snow and I spent many years doing live news reports out in several feet of snow for hours on end in my previous career, I figured I'd share some of my winter must-have items!  Read more below.

Blizzard Beauty

Winter Favorites:

North Face Parka:  Mine is about 5 years old now and I still absolutely love it.  After reporting in sub-zero conditions (think -15, windchill of -25) and covering the Valentine's Day Blizzard in February 2007, I invested in a serious parka and this one has kept me warm and dry time after time.  Sadly, I am at my parents' house right now and I didn't bring this with me :(    To keep seriously warm, I also wear lots of layers:  long underwear, jeans, a wool sweater, snow pants and hand and foot warmers.

Warm Boots:    My husband bought me the North Face's Nuptse Purna Boots for Christmas and I love them.  I wanted a warm and rugged - yet stylish - boot.  My husband knows me well! I fell in love with the faux fur detail and they're perfect because they are waterproof and well insulated.  I love playing in the snow with Charlotte and that demands a warm, rugged boot.  I also need a good grip if it's icy out!

Cashmere Scarf:  I always wear a scarf in the snow.  I absolutely hate getting snow down my neck!  I also use the scarf over my face if the snow is blowing.  And nothing beats cashmere for softness.

Cashmere Socks:  One of my biggest pet peeves is having cold feet (literally and figuratively)!  To eliminate that, I wear heavy cashmere socks (usually two pair) and I also put foot warmers in my boots.  Because I used to stand out in the snow for long intervals during television storm coverage, I had to make sure my feet were warm and this worked well!

Hand Care:  I swear by the Satin Hands Pampering Set set by Mary Kay.  I use the set weekly (sometimes more) and for me, it quickly eliminates painful dry skin and redness.  I use the moisturizer that comes in the set daily.  Having chapped hands is one of my big pet peeves.  I also love that this set comes as fragrance-free.  I also use their Satin Lips set to exfoliate and moisturize my lips.

Lips:  When I am out in harsh conditions, I constantly swipe on Burt's Bees natural beeswax lip balm.   I also use it on Charlotte because it's natural.

Hat and Gloves:  These go without saying.  I can't go without a warm yet stylish hat in the snow.  I often carry a couple with me.  Gloves are an absolute must.  Not wearing them is the quickest way to chap your hands, as most of you probably know all too well.  I wear heavy-duty gloves when I am playing in the snow.  Day-to-day, I wear either leather/cashmere-lined gloves or my favorite Isotoner spandex gloves.

Sunglasses:  I don't like blowing snow getting into my eyes.  I did not wear sunglasses when I was a reporter on the air.  But now, I won't leave the house without my sunglasses in the snow (especially since I wear contacts).

Hope you weather the storm if you're in the path of this blizzard.  Or, if you're in 70 degree weather - enjoy that too!!

Sweet Cyber Monday

As far as shopping goes, this is one of my favorite days of the year because I absolutely love a sale!!  The discounts are usually so good, I don't just do my holiday shopping but I also do shopping for home items, birthdays and other events.  Here are some of my favorite items I am watching this Cyber Monday.   Happy Shopping!

The Bridesmaid's Dress Restyled

Many of you may laugh at the suggestion of restyling your bridesmaid dresses!  Yes, I do have some in my closet I could never imagine restyling.   I think my sister, Anne,  may laugh very hard at the suggestion of restyling the ice pink satin bridesmaid dress she wore in my wedding.  However, if you are lucky enough, you may have one (or maybe a neutral dress in your closet) you can restyle for several different occasions.   My sister-in-law Grace had the smart thought to allow us to select our own style of navy bridesmaid cocktail dresses.  Her thought was that we could wear the dress again and again.  Here is a similar navy dress restyled four ways.

Here is the original navy blue bridesmaid dress.
I have numerous plans for it!

Here are my pink satin bridal party dresses.  Honestly, they are not so easy to restyle for regular use.  I don't expect to see any of my friends/family wearing this dress out for a cocktail party or dinner.  Perhaps they could wear the dress to a black tie event. Or perhaps they are better suited as fabric for Charlotte's ice pink room :)

Finding the Perfect Summer Dress

Finding dresses to wear to weddings and other events can be fun but it can also be stressful if it's last minute.

Some key things to consider include:
Fabric:  I love traditional cotton or seersucker (all cotton) during the summer because cotton breathes well on those scorching hot days.  I got married on a 90-plus degree day, so I felt the pain of my wedding guests standing in our reception line outside.  Plus, I love it when I can find a dress I don't have to dry clean for  once!
Color:  I mostly love light colors for the summer.   Try colors you might not wear in the winter like light yellows, aqua, lavender, etc.  I stay as far away from any shade of white or light pink or light silver when I attend a wedding because it's the bride's day.  I also try to stay away from black because I think it's always the stereotypical wedding guest color.  (That being said, yes, I've worn black before!  But I like to try to have more fun with summer colors.)
Versatility:  How many other ways can you style the dress?  Can you add a light tan blazer and wear it to work?  Can you style it with different jewelry and wear it to another summer event?  This is a key question for me!

Sweet on Shoes

Thanks for checking out my blog!  Hope you have a great day.  Follow me on FacebookTwitter and Pinterest, if you like.

Shoes Loyal Shoes:   There are few things I love in my closet more than a pair of fabulous shoes.  Shoes, handbags and jewels are our most loyal pieces.  They don't care about the size of our hips or stomachs.  They fit when you gain or lose weight.  They can make such a bold statement they take even the most discerning eye away from any areas we are self-conscious about.  Many people say style begins at the bottom (the shoe) and works its way up.

This spring and summer, there are so many shoes to love!  Ah, if I could have them all!   Here are the key trends I've highlighted here and all for $100 or less.

Key Trends:  Floral, d'Orsay Flats (two-piece), Wedges, Bright Colors, Metallics and Perforated.

Spring Wish List

Happy (almost) spring!  To say I'm not eagerly awaiting the arrival of spring would be like saying I'm not fond of shopping at all :) Honestly, I used to shop in a very random and unprepared way, which would drive me (and my husband) crazy.  I lacked direction.  I couldn't make up my mind and I spent hours and hours trying to decide what to buy when we would shop.  Creating a "wish list" has been incredibly helpful.  It allows me to better visualize what I love and what will work in my life and my closet.  For the most part, I now can pass on the things that don't fit my list with a lot less regret.  I stray, however, if it's an unexpected, incredible treasure - case in point, I just scored a Burberry Brit scarf at a price far too good to pass up.  I've been waiting for this large scarf/wrap for seven years (no joke)!

So, this is my general list (not exact labels) I'm searching for this spring.  I love the pink and yellow pops of color.  The white jeans will be my spring "uniform" and I love the fresh look of a striped skirt and striped shoes.    I especially love these Payless striped shoes because spring in New England can be so unkind.  I absolutely hate to ruin an expensive pair of shoes in the mud!  Many of my everyday shoes in the spring are inexpensive.  My more expensive shoes are "fair weather" shoes!
